St.Lucia

The majestic, proclaimed Helen of the West Indies, island St. Lucia was formulated after a volcanic eruption occurred in the south of the island, in the town now known as Soufriere. The rushing lava settled and created land above sea, thus the birth of the island St. Lucia. Surrounded by lush vegetation and the beautiful Caribbean Sea, St. Lucia stands out as and island above the rest. St. Lucia, a country which had originally been nurtured and led by its motherland England earned its independence on the 22nd of February in the year 1979, after its inhabitants had proven to Queen Elizabeth, her majesty queen of England, that they were capable of making responsible decisions on their country’s behalf and that they had the ability to guide and lead its people with the help of the appointed Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy. St. Lucia attained its own identity, and as representation of its liberation, they earned themselves the right to their very own flag.

                                                                                           The National Flag

Each color of the flag symbolizes that which the inhabitants of St. Lucia take the most pride in. The blue; represents the sea and the sky that surrounds the island, the black and white; stands for its people, the inclusion of these colors are important as they indicate that we are one as a nation and that we have overcome the time when skin color hindered our union, the yellow; this represents the light, the bright yellow sun which shimmers brightly beyond the horizon and looks over our nation.

Along with independence came the right of each citizen to vote and elect a party of local representatives, whom they consider to be suitable to make decisions on the nation’s behalf, however even after liberation queen Elizabeth still remains the head of state of the island.

This island had faced many challenges prior to its independence and formulating its own culture. The French and the British had several brutal battles over 150 years in the attempt to gain control and complete ownership of the land. Each party had won seven times but in the end the British were crowned victors of the war. To this day St. Lucians still practice both the English and the patois/ creole language. The patois language was derived from our French ancestors and the districts within the island were all given French names, however many other cultural functions practiced within the island today were introduced by the English.
